Robotics Secures Grant and Competes at Cowtown Throwdown

SM North Robotics secure a $2500 grant from the KC STEM Alliance.  The funds will help purchase needed materials as the team prepares for the competition Spring 2014.

The North Robotics Team competed at the COWTOWN THROWDOWN  at Lee’s Summit High School sponsored by Cerner Corporation, Lee’s Summit High School and Ruskin High School.

Forty-eight teams competed from the mid-west area in an off season program with the game “Ultimate Ascent”.  This game was a repeat from the KC Regional competition last spring.

Thirteen students from the North team helped with the effort using problem solving skills.  The North Stars were guided in game strategy by Senior Programmer Chris Colahan, and Robot Team Student Leader, Peter Hubenett. Chelle Ferm, Collin Watson, Josh Patterson, Gray Irwin, Bronwyn McNaughton, Jared Spencer, and Maria Navarro served as robot team facilitators and pit crew.  Dyan Ball and Darius Reasco were at work using their programing skills to keep the robot running in a different environment.  Brennan Colahan and Brian Mehl took charge of the robot driving with Chris Colahan as student coach.

Team mentors, North teachers, Homer Ritter and Sara Gibbens, along with Senior Engineer Rex Darrow helped with the technical assistance and guidance.  The North Stars had a successful day of keeping the robot running in every match, played defense for its alliances, and climbed to the first level of the pyramid.  North was on its way to the second pyramid, but ran out of time.
