Why I, a millennial, am not ‘feeling the Bern’

Let me get this clear before I start; yes, when Senator Bernie Sanders announced his run for presidency, I was ecstatic, just like every other millennial out there thinking that he was the hero that we all needed. However, I am now seeing that he is not the leader we need, and here’s why.

  1. He’s too one-sided. The night after the Paris attacks, Bernie, Hillary Clinton, and Martin O’Malley (God bless his soul) came together for another Democratic debate, and was the night I started to realize he wasn’t what he was cracked up to be. The focus, before the attacks happened, were going to be mainly on economic policies, gun control, women’s reproductive rights, the usual for Dem debates. However, after the attacks, that focus changed to foreign policy and terrorism, which favored Hillary. During their opening statements, Martin and Hillary focused on the attacks, expressing their condolences and addressing the War on Terror. Bernie was a different story. After stating that the attacks left him “shocked” and “disgusted”, he immediately began talking about his “political revolution” and the “rigged economy.” This isn’t what we need in a president. When terror, or anything of the sort strikes, the president needs to be able to change his focus away from his agenda and focusing on the needs of their people.
  2. He’s too liberal. Bernie is known for his radically liberal ideas such as free college, which, let’s be honest, is nuts. Someone who is too far leaning isn’t going to get anything done and won’t compromise with “the other side.” The best presidents are the ones that know how to compromise after all.
  3. Too much free stuff. Free college? Healthcare? No thank you. Nothing in life is totally free. How do you expect to be able to pay your professors, and upkeep universities without tuition costs? An increase in taxes? And you expect Americans and Congress to be okay with this? No thanks. These are all just a bunch of fantasies and empty promises.
  4. All the memes of him against Hillary, or any meme in general, are the most annoying things to happen since Minions became a thing. They need to be stopped.

This whole election to me, and a majority of Americans according to a poll by Pew Research Center, is a fat mess. Not one candidate stands out as the next President of the United States on either side, and is leaving most of us in the dark. I do plan on going to the caucus (I am a registered Democrat) and voting in November, but the weak candidates make it very hard for me (and I’m sure others) to make a decision.
