NHS Initiation Ceremony

The new National Honors Society members will be initiated at the NHS Initiation Ceremony on Oct. 10 from 7-9 p.m.

The National Honor Society, or NHS, is a service and academic group that was established in 1921 and recognizes outstanding high school students. Today, over one million students participate in NHS activities in the nation. To qualify to become an NHS member, students need a 3.6 GPA or higher.

“What we do once we’re in is we represent leadership, character, service, and then obviously academics was the other portion,” Julie Taylor, NHS sponsor, said. “So we do community service, as well as service within the building.”

Taylor’s main job is to facilitate these service projects. Students will send her requests—a project at the church, need volunteers to unload a pumpkin truck for Halloween—and Taylor will ask for volunteers within NHS who then go to participate.

“There is a project that we do for Johnson County Christmas Bureau,” Taylor said. “So that’s one that a lot of our different groups actually go for, and I go to volunteer with that one.”

This Monday is the NHS Initiation Ceremony for new members. Students will come in and get announced individually, and afterwards there’s a reception.

“We do a lighting ceremony with candles all around and basically it’s their way of pledging that they’re going to, you know, give back to the community, and represent the school well, and be good leaders,” Taylor said.
