Cross Country coach Aaron Davidson was expecting big things out of his runners at regionals on Saturday, Oct. 23.

“This was a course that we have ran before so our kids were confident going into it,” he said. “I thought we did the things that we have talked about all season which is the reason it went so well.”

With a complete sweep of the 6A races, with both boys and girls taking first place and the first place finisher in both races, the Indians showed they were the top team in the Sunflower League.

“This year I have focused a lot more on the team,” said senior Joseph Coddington who won the boys race. “I was just being a individual runner last year and this year I focused more on being a good teammate to my team, and building our team up as a whole.”

Coddington, who is a veteran, will go to state for the forth time this year, but for sophomore Blake Taylor, this was a whole new experience.

“Last year I didn’t even do cross country” Taylor said “State is going to be nerve racking, but I’m excited to run it and it’s on one of the hardest courses and it’s going to be really fun.”

The boys ended with four of the top 10 finishers to help lead them to their first place title.

The girls turned in an even more dominant performance by placing 7 runners in the top 12 lead by junior Katie Kasunic.

“It was nice just to be up in the front and have nothing else in front of you, and it’s basically you and the race at that point” she said as she went on to win her second race of the year.

Behind Kasunic, senior Cassie Raines and junior Caroline Colburn, girls are the favorites and they are ready for state.

“I did already race the course that we are going to be racing at so that definitely a confidence booster going into it,” Kasunic said. “I know that I can finish it, but I’m not nervous, I’m in deep anticipation.”

Davidson is really proud of his team and what they have been able to accomplish this year.

“They are looking to finish what they started at the State Cross Country meet in Lawrence on the Oct. 28. I think we emphasized some of the more important things that good teams need to do and we really focused on trying to be good at those things,” Davidson said. “I think we had some kids that have been in the program for four years so they know what the expectation is and they are just starting to understand it better what it is that we want from them, so understanding that and executing is the reason we had success this year.”
