Sweet Victory

Football wins first game of the season

Shawnee Mission North’s first football game was Sept. 4 at North Stadium against Shawnee Mission South.

The game started off with yelling, chanting, stomping and a surprise onside kick which North would recover. North fans cheered early in the first quarter as the first touchdown was scored by sophomore running back Reece Silla, and the drive was topped off with a 2-point conversion that gave North a quick lead of 8-0.

During the second quarter, North had another touchdown and 2-point conversion which increased the cheering and the lead from 8 to 16, and ended with the customary Marching Band halftime show.

The Marching Band and Drill Team introduced their new theme for this year called “Predator vs. Prey” during the halftime show. They performed a collection of songs from popular movies such as “The Hunger Games”, “Jaws”, “The Terminator”, “The Mission” and “Predator”. On the field, the two teams attacked their floor work by creating Arnold Schwarzenegger’s face for “The Terminator movie” and the shark for “Jaws”.

Coming back from the halftime show, neither North nor South scored during the third quarter. During the fourth quarter however, both North and South scored touchdowns and gained 6 point respectively, with South getting an extra 2-point conversion.

The final score was 22-8 with North bringing home the first victory of the season.
