Hiring of new Varsity baseball coach brings high expectations

Several coaches were hired recently, including the new head Varsity baseball coach, Jason Day. Day will begin teaching in the social studies department at the start of the 2015-2016 school year.

“[The hire] was tied into the social studies position because the goal is to get as many coaches in the building as we can,” Principal Richard Kramer said, “and we made a commitment to stick to that this year.”

More than 130 teachers applied for the social studies position. Out of those applicants, eight were screened down with a baseball background. From there Kramer said the applicants had many hoops to jump through before finally being interviewed for the job.

Kramer believes that students are going to get new opportunities because of new coaches not just in baseball, but in other sports as well.

“I think it’s going to be a real shot of adrenaline in our sports programs,” Kramer said. “A little bit of winning goes a long way. Good things happen when kids believe they can compete and win.”

Kramer said that the goal now is to get as many assistant coaches in the building as the school possibly can.

“Anytime coaches are in the building, it helps facilitate communications and relationships with your players, parents, and other teachers,” Kramer said. “In a perfect world all your coaches are in the building.”

Players returning next season had the opportunity to meet Day at practice on May 13 and get to know him a little bit.

“[Day] seems like he will do things right,” sophomore Sam Schwartz said. “I feel like he’s going to pick up right where Dreiling left off. He told us he wants the transition between coaches to be as smooth as possible.”

Sophomore Jackson Drakulich said he was excited about the hire as well.

“It seems as though it might be a transition year, but it seems like Coach Day has a lot in common with Coach Dreiling,” Drakulich said. “I hope some things change, but I wouldn’t be surprised if a lot of things stay the same.”

Schwartz and Drakulich both expect to improve their overall record next year.

“My expectations for next year are to win at least one more game than this year,” Drakulich said. “We just need to practice harder and get better. I also think that we need to bond more as a team. If we create a brotherhood that will be impossible to break, then we will be impossible to beat. Next year will be a new chapter in the North baseball program, and it will be exciting to see what is in store.”
