New Soccer Coach Plans on Pushing Girls in the Right Direction

Shawnee Mission North girls soccer is now in full swing after their opening game on Tuesday March 27 against Highland Park in Topeka. The final score was 5-0 making it their first win of the season.

“I think we have the potential to be pretty good,” Varsity coach Jim Ricker said. “It will just be a matter of time and believing we can do something special.”

Ricker is the new head coach for the girls soccer team. He attended SM North as a his high school student and also taught here soon after he graduated from college.

“It’s great being back here at SMN,” Ricker said. “The girls work really hard and make it a lot of fun.”

Ricker has been playing soccer since he was 4 years old and he said he has loved it ever since. He has coached for over 23 years on all levels and said that he really enjoys coaching the high school age because he likes seeing if he can teach them something new or clean up their game even if it’s just a little.

The girls soccer team’s first home game will take place Tuesday, April 10 at 7 p.m. The team encourages students to attend the game and cheer on their home team.
