Journalism students attend Gloria Shields All-American Workshop in Dallas

Hours of traveling awaited SM high school students from North, East and South in the early hours of Sunday, July 8. They arrived in Addison, Texas to attend the 33 annual Gloria Shields All-American Workshop located in the Marriot Hotel. Here students attended classes to further their knowledge of photography, article writing and editorial leadership.

The students took a morning, afternoon and evening class everyday until Thursday. On Monday a press conference was held that gave students a chance to put what they have learned to the test.

Skip Hollandsworth, the co-screenwriter of the upcoming movie ‘Bernie’ was the center point of the press conference. Over 150 photography, writing and film students interviewed Hollandsworth about the movie and what it is like be a screenwriter.

“It was overwhelming, all the photographers were all around [Hollandsworth], trying to get different photos,” Junior Goldia Kiteck said. ” It was chaotic, but fun.”

The Online Publishing students use the week to learn the ins and outs of using online media such as websites, sounds slides and the importance of Facebook and Twitter. Their stories, photos and videos were posted for workshop students and parents to see.

“After this week, we are going to have a lot of stuff we can bring our journalism class at school,” senior Brandon Morrison said. “The things we have learned here will impact our newspaper and yearbook this year.”

The advanced Photography students visited a skate park on Tuesday and did a photo story.
