Associate Principal David Ewers named principal

Beginning July 1, Ewers takes over as Principal Jeremy Higgins moves over to district HR job

With the recent news that Dr. Higgins would be leaving SM North to become the Director of Secondary Human Resources for the Shawnee Mission School District, there were many questions as to who would fill his role. Then Dr. Higgins sent out a video to the staff announcing that associate principal David Ewers would be the new principal of North.

“A few years ago it [becoming principal] really became a goal of mine, especially how much I love this school, and the fact that we live in the community, I really wanted to be the principal here,” Ewers said. “I wasn’t really interested in being principal anywhere else, and so I just kind of wanted to learn different roles since I’d been an associate principal, so that I could prepare myself for the opportunity whenever it opened up.”

Ewers started his career in 2002 at Moss Hill Trails Middle School where he worked for one year as a teacher, before he moved to Olathe Northwest.

“I had the great opportunity to open up a new high school, Olathe Northwest in 2003 and I spent nine years there as a teacher and I taught US history, and I was a football coach, and a head track coach for six of those nine years,” Ewers said. “From there I was an associate principal and athletic director at Mill Valley high school from 2012 to 2015.”

Then in the fall of 2015 Ewers came to North to serve as the athletic director, and then later on as an associate principal.

“I love the history and the traditions of North,” Ewers said. “The previous two high schools that I had worked at were brand new schools and both opened in the 21st century, and they were great schools, but I liked the tradition of excellence here at North.”
