North students competed this past weekend in the UMKC Academic World Quest competition. Sponsored by US AP History teacher John Durham, the students were victorious over tough academic teams including past winners, SM East and SM South.
Four of the seniors participated in the Academic World Quest competition on Saturday, Feb. 23 at UMKC and hosted by the International Relations Council KC. The results came down to the wire as students answered questions involving topics such as energy policy, economic competition, the Middle East, China, education, environmental sustainability and others. The content focused on international relations, foreign policy decisions, current topics and other historically relevant areas. In the end, it came down to a tie breaking round between North and Lawrence. North was declared the champion, with Lawrence High finishing second. There were over 20 schools, including past winners SM East and SM South in the competition.
The team consisted of Tristan Abbott who posted a perfect science score in the Academic Decathlon state competition last month, Jason Foster, Ali Oguz, and Andrew Nelson.
Tristan, Jason, Ali and Andrew not only won a trophy for North to display for the next year but also a free trip to compete at the national competition at Georgetown University in Washington D.C.
