The SM North student council hosted and organized for the second year North-A-Palooza on April 16 in the SM north parking lot. Social studies teacher Kayte Cormack is the sponsor of the student council. Senior Mallory LaBrasca was in charge of the event because she is the student body treasurer.
“I want to say this was all of Mallory’s work,” Cormack said, “She did all the work. I like to say it is her “baby” because of how much work and dedication she put into this event.”
Members of the student council started this event because they wanted to give back. They wanted to create a fun event for the school while also raising money for a good cause.
“We were able to raise $3,200 at the event and donate that to Children’s Mercy,” LaBrasca said.
This was the second year the student council has organized North-A-Palooza.
“This gave the students a real life experience and I was very grateful that we were able to get the middle school students involved this year,” Cormack said.
During this event for the first time they had live music. Everyone loved the music they had been getting nothing but good comments about the new addition. The band played well known songs to get people’s attention.
“We had performances from jazz band, drumline, Jack Dunker, and a student band. This added a more festival feel to the event and I think kept parents entertained as well,” LaBrasca said.
Most of this event was planned by Mallory, but some of the leadership class and student council representatives helped plan this event as well. NHS volunteers also helped run North-A-Palooza the night of as well.
Switching the event from seminar to the evening was a risky yet amazing move.
“I loved having it in the evening because families were able to come and support SMN,” Cormack said, “it was also kids who really wanted to be there, they were not just trying to get out of seminar.”
“This was the first time having it at night,” LeBrasca said, “I would say it was very successful and we were able to raise more money than we have in the past 2 years.”
