From Nov. 1-5, eight students from the yearbook and newspaper staff traveled to Chicago for the JEA/NSPA National conference.

The conference was the second biggest it’s ever been with 6,366 attendees and included classes on a variety of different topics.

“My favorite presentation that I attended was the Stoneman Douglas High School speaker, it was very emotional watching how they covered the incident that took the lives of 17 students, within their yearbook and newspaper. It showed they had a lot of courage, bravery and strength to come together and finish their publication after such a traumatic incident,” junior D’Angilo Allen said.

The SMN Yearbook competed and placed third in their Best of Show category. In the JEA Write-off competition several students placing in individual categories. Awards in the “Excellent” category were awarded to Evan Whitaker for Sports Action Photography and Anna Fritz for Yearbook Cover/Endsheets. Nadia Battle also was awarded an Honorable Mention for her Yearbook Copy/Caption in Student Life.

Along with the convention, the trip included a tour of Facebook’s Chicago office, a trip to a Bulls game, and tickets to the Broadway show Hamilton.
