Wrestling Update
December 18, 2015
Despite having low numbers, wrestling has been doing well this season and had multiple medalist in the past two tournaments, according to assistant coach Conan McCormack.
In the first tournament at Leavenworth, they had four medalist, seniors Jose Nippert, Nick Carson and Miles Johnson. Freshman Alonso Salgado also placed. At their next tournament at the SM Northwest Invitational they also had another four place. Carson and Nippert placed again, while senior Joe Steve and sophomore Tanner Willmon also placed.
“Our numbers are really low,” McCormack said. “Not that many kids were interested in wrestling this year. We’re doing the best with what we got and what we do have is good quality and it’s better to have good quality than sheer numbers.”
McCormack hopes to take six wrestlers to state this year, one less than what they took last year.
The next meet will be at Blue Valley High School on Dec. 18 and 19, 2016. They will be taking five wrestlers and will be one of the 19 schools that are competing.
“You have to be in really good condition to make it through a two day tournament,” McCormack said. “That’s one of components to wrestling; to have the physical strength and stamina to make it through multiple days.”
