Medical Science students participated in a Gift of Life “Life Savers Rally” on Tuesday, Oct. 29.  North student attendees included  Renee Bowlin, Maggie Cole, Aleesha Gonzalez, Emily Kyle, Cindy Lazo, Taylor Magyar, Hailey Marshall, Maria Navarro, Rachel Panjada, Ali Patterson, Erin Robertson, Aleah Sadeghi, Bot Touch, Kimberly Tran, Matt Webb, Michael Webb, Bridget Wray, Constance Wunder, and Daniel Zolotar. Robert Oliver, sponsor, is the Shawnee Mission North Medical Science/Health Teacher.

Speakers at the rally included Dr. Sean Kumer, Susan and Barb Frye, Dr. Deborah Ellerbusch, Anne Peterson, and Mike Nolte.

“Dr. Kumer was one of the first speakers at the Gift of Life rally, and started it off with a bang,” junior Bridget Wray said. “He is a transplant surgeon who currently works at KU Medical, and his story truly amazed me. He said, ‘Thank you’ multiple times during his speech and the fact that a man of his prestige would be telling high school students thank you exposed his humility. At the end as we were asking questions, a former patient went on to say, ‘Dr. Kumer cared for me before, during, and after the surgery, and his time was spent making sure I was comfortable. I truly believe we have the best surgeon here in Kansas.’ Dr. Kumer choked up at this remark, and to see his passion for his work and his patients was truly remarkable.”
