On Aug. 13, the sound of fresh sneakers on the wood floor and anxious chatter between friends filled the Fieldhouse. As Associate Principal Annette Gonzalez began to introduce herself and welcomed the students, the class of 2019 was ready to experience their first day of high school.

“My first day was like a dream honestly,” freshman William Conaway said. “Everything that I thought was going to happen, actually happened.”

The day was full of activities, ranging from an introduction to the procedures used at the school to a demonstration of a pep assembly. Students were led around the school by student leaders who volunteered their time to help the new students. After lunch, the students were able to go to their classes for shortened periods in order to see what a day at North is like.

“The first day without the upperclassmen was good,” freshman Alyssa Freeman said. “By the time they got here it was kind of intimidating.”

Freshman were offered the opportunity to get information about the clubs the school has, along with the academic programs and extracurricular activities. This first day, though eventful, is only a small slice of what high school is really like. As the weeks pass, the freshman class will have more opportunities to fully immerse themselves in the high school cultures.

“I think the rest of high school will go well as long as I try,” Freeman said. “There’s a lot of great people here, and I feel like people are a lot more friendly in high school.”
