Michelle Hubbard to be next superintendent effective July

Dr. Michelle Hubbard has been announced to take over as the next district superintendent in July. She will replace outgoing superintendent Dr. Mike Fulton, who announced his retirement in December 2020.

Hubbard is in her sixth year with Shawnee Mission School District, and served as an associate superintendent until she was promoted to deputy superintendent in January of this year. She currently serves as deputy superintendent and will until she is appointed superintendent later this year.

After Fulton announced his retirement, the board conducted an internal search for his replacement and said that, ultimately, Hubbard stood out.

“You are intimately familiar with our community’s goals and how to get us there,” Board President Heather Ousley said during a board meeting on Feb. 22. “I look forward to working with you in the years to come.”

Fulton also spoke at the meeting, congratulating Hubbard on her appointment.

“You are a wonderful colleague, care deeply about children and you are going to be a fantastic superintendent,” he said.

SM North associate principal and soon to be principal David Ewers said he has talked with Hubbard on several occasions.

“Dr Hubbard is a visionary leader,” Ewers said. “She’s passionate about student learning and student engagement, and she has a wealth of experience in a multitude of facets within our district level.”
