District board meeting recap May 13

The following is a summary of the May 13 SMSD Board of Education meeting.

 

  • Adoption of agenda; approval of minutes from April 22 regular meeting

 

  • Report by Superintendent Michael Fulton
    • Many SMSD students won awards at the annual R&D Forum
    • The new Brookwood Elementary officially opened
    • Three SMSD teachers earned Jedel Excellence in Mathematics Education awards
    • A ceremony was held to honor retiring teachers
    • SMSD hospitality and culinary arts students earned awards at the state level
    • Five SMSD students earned a perfect ACT score
    • U.S. News and World Report ranked five SMSD high schools among the best in the state
    • Debbie Ryan from SM West and Jessica Risinger from Comanche Elementary were named SMSD All Stars
    • SMEF Excellence in Education grants were awarded to 14 educators
    • The technology task force is continuing their work

 

  • Strategic Planning Update
    • The strategic planning committee is continuing their work in action teams

 

  • Reports from Board Members
    • Deb Zila said the application period for in-house legal counsel has closed and applications will be reviewed soon

 

  • Chief Financial Officer Russell Knapp gave a budget update and a budget workshop regarding operating funds

 

  • Approval of consent agenda items

 

  • Approval of action items including playground renovations at four schools and construction contracts to begin work on the SMSD urban farm

  • The board dismissed to executive session to discuss negotiations and personnel matters
