Black History Month Program

Black History Month, which began as “Negro History Week”, began in the late 1960s. North’s 16th annual Black History Month program will take place on February 22 during seminar. Tickets can be found in room 107. English teacher Natalie Johnson-Berry has been a part of the program for two years.

“It’s always a joy to work on the program,” Johnson-Berry said. “We hope to bring not only entertainment to those who view the program, but to also spread awareness of the challenges faced by African Americans.”

Some of the acts included in the program are a jazz routine, a violin solo, and the SM North choir. There are many music related talents, but that’s not all the program had to offer.

“We have things such as orations,” Johnson-Berry said. “We have a dramatic and a traditional oration, an African runway show, and a large group of young ladies who will entertain everyone with popular street dances based from the African American community.”

All of the acts shown in the program have some relation to African American history.

“The goal of the program is to celebrate the rich culture and accomplishments of African Americans throughout history,” Johnson-Berry said. “And to also celebrate how these brave and inspiring individuals influence us today.”
