Henry’s Law
December 18, 2015
Every year, an SM North student is elected to choose and direct a play of their choice. This year the chosen candidate was senior Marissa Horine.
“I was really lucky to be picked to direct,” Horine said. “Last year I worked with Danny Lubratovic when he directed Dr. Horrible’s Sing Along Blog and it was so much fun, but this show was really different from that, so I didn’t know what I was working with.”
The chosen play this year was called Henry’s Law, a show broadly about the effects of cyberbullying. The show had a significantly smaller show than most plays at SM North, with only four members.
“Casting was really tough, but once I got my cast together and we had our first read through, I knew it was going to be awesome,” Horine said. “Two of the actors had never been in a show before and the other two had only been in one show here at North, but they way they read through the show the first time, you would have never guessed.”
Junior Ariana Williams was among one of the four members casted in the show, along with freshman Mia Aramovich, senior Felipe Aguilar, and sophomore Dakota West.
“I’ve never been on stage,” Williams said. “I mean I played a tree in our third grade play, but I’m not sure if that counts. Regardless, this was my first real theatre experience. The friendships that I’ve made over the past month with people I looked up to at one point is amazing. Marissa Horine is probably one of the best student directors (and one of the funniest people) I’ve ever gotten to meet. When she casted me, she gave me so much more than just a role. She gave me the opportunity to meet new people, get out of my comfort zone, and to make memories that would last me a lifetime. I couldn’t be more thankful to have her in my life.”
The show took place in the Little Theater on Dec. 11-12.
“We made a lot of memories in the month we had together and I really appreciate all of their hard work,” Horine said. They made me so proud, I am so lucky I got to work with them and get to know them all, since I didn’t really know them before. They’re all such wonderful, fun people and I’m so grateful to have had such an awesome cast and crew.”
