NHS holds 83rd initiation ceremony
October 9, 2013
On Monday, Oct. 7, the National Honor Society held its 83rd initiation ceremony in the SMN auditorium. Students were inducted based on their involvement in the four pillars the organization is founded on – Service, Scholarship, Leadership and Character. Five seniors and 31 juniors were inducted for their first year of membership, along with 34 returning members.
“I thought [the ceremony] went really well,” said Executive board member senior Katelyn Huxman. “[I think NHS is beneficial because] as a senior, they really try to keep you on track for applying to colleges and keeping up with deadlines and letters of recommendation and everything.”
Although the ceremony was only the first official get-together for all members, first-year inductees were prepared to take on the responsibilities of being in the honorary program.
“Being in NHS motivates me to do well in school and help my school and community,” junior Joe Roubinek said. “I’m excited to get started on my volunteer hours because it’s more fun volunteering with your friends.”
The evening played out without a hitch, and a reception was held in the library immediately afterwards.
“We carried on a wonderful tradition at North, Monday evening, celebrating the 83rd initiation of our new National Honor Society Students,” sponsor Laurie Matson-Ritter said. ” The candle light ceremony is always very impressive, and everyone was very complimentary of the students and staff who participated. My many thanks to the NHS faculty board – Sherry Crawford, Aaron Davidson, Jon Durham, Connie Gandy, Ashley Graham, Nancy Hadley, Debbie Kapaun, Brad Rose, Leslie Stelzer, and Julie Taylor – whose organization and help made the event another very special North event.”
