Dr. Michael Fulton, the recently-hired SMSD superintendent, held a press conference with student journalists from across the district on March 2.

Student reporters had 45 minutes to meet the superintendent and ask questions. During the meeting, Fulton expressed his desire for transparency within the district.

“Transparency is connected to trust,” Fulton said. “I want to be open and honest and I think we need to be proactive in communication.”

In addition to communication with the community, Fulton values student input as well.

“It’s important that students are involved,” Fulton said. “Student voice is important and I look forward to interacting with students.”

The decision to hire Fulton was announced by the board of education during a special meeting on Feb. 12. His role as superintendent officially begins on July 1, replacing interim superintendent Kenny Southwick.
