SM North community members gathered in the cafeteria on Sept. 25 for a meet-and-greet with Superintendent Michael Fulton.

The two-hour-long event was part of a series of superintendent meet-and-greets held at high schools across the district since the start of the school year.

“It’s an opportunity for the community to come out and meet with me in an open forum,” Fulton said. “It’s important to build community and I think when you have a superintendent that’s coming in new to an area, it’s important for people to connect to that person.”

North Principal Jeremy Higgins said the meet-and-greets are as much about Fulton getting to know the community as they are about the community getting to know him.

“It’s about meeting him and making sure he knows about the North community and what’s important to the North community,” Higgins said.

Beth Koon, an art teacher from Belinder Elementary School, attended the event as an opportunity to meet Fulton. Her husband, Brian, was also in attendance and said he appreciates Fulton opening himself up to public events such as meet-and-greets.

“With the former superintendent, it seemed like the only way to try to contact him was through lines of communication that were neglected,” Koon said. “We are really happy with having accessibility to the new superintendent.”
