This year, mixed media artist and Kansas City Art Institute Illustration Department Chairman/Instructor Steve Mayse, displayed his work in the SM North Greg Brantman Patrons Art Gallery.  Mayse spoke with the Advanced Placement (AP) Art students on Thursday, Aug. 30 regarding his body of work, how he approaches design and where he finds inspiration. Following his engaging lecture, students were invited to take part in a one-day workshop at his studio on Thursday, Sept. 6. Students utilized various art making materials (charcoal, pencils, scissors, glue, ink and paper) to create original mixed media pieces. Students worked to “loosen up” by completing numerous dowel-rod drawings which require large body movements and is an active method of transferring what the artist sees to the page. Students also drew from a still life and incorporated collaged items to add texture, color and value to their work. The AP students enjoyed learning outside of the classroom walls and were greatly inspired by  Mayse, his studio and his approach to art-making. It proved to be a wonderful day and students were extremely appreciative of the amazing learning opportunity provided by the Greg Brantman Patrons Art Gallery fund.

North Art teachers are Cortney Dougherty, Sarah McKee and Emily Patterson
